Freight Charges

What is Detention?

A charge for holding the carrier's container outside the port too long.

Detention is charged when the importer keeps the carrier's container outside the terminal — for unpacking at the warehouse — beyond the allotted free time, or when an exporter holds it too long before return. Like demurrage it accrues per day, and the two are often confused; demurrage is at the terminal, detention is away from it.
