Import duty & landed cost — frequently asked questions

How is import duty calculated?
Import duty is the customs value of the goods — usually the CIF value (goods + freight + insurance) — multiplied by the duty rate for the product's HS code in the destination country. Import VAT or GST is then charged on the customs value plus the duty.
What is landed cost?
Landed cost is the total cost of getting an imported product to your door: the goods value plus freight, insurance, customs duty, import VAT/GST and any handling or broker fees. It is the real per-unit cost you should price against.
Where do I find the duty rate for my product?
Look up the rate by HS code and destination country in an official tariff schedule — for example the WTO/ITC Market Access Map, the US HTS, or the EU TARIC. Enter that rate into the calculator and it computes the duty, taxes and landed cost for you.
Does the calculator look up US duty rates automatically?
For imports into the United States, yes — enter the HS code and country of origin in the auto-lookup section and it fetches the current rate from the US International Trade Commission's Harmonized Tariff Schedule, including Section 301/232 and reciprocal-tariff surcharges where they apply, shown as separate line items. Rates are cached and refreshed roughly weekly. Other destinations still require a manual lookup for now — this is an estimate for planning purposes, not a substitute for a licensed customs broker.
