What is Free Time?
The grace period to use a container before demurrage or detention applies.
Free time is the number of days a carrier allows for picking up, unpacking and returning a container before demurrage (at the terminal) or detention (away from it) charges begin. Free time is negotiable, especially for regular shippers, and managing it well is a key way to control hidden logistics costs.
