What is Proforma Invoice?

A preliminary quote-style invoice issued before the sale is confirmed.

A proforma invoice is a preliminary document the seller issues before shipment — effectively a detailed quotation — so the buyer can arrange payment, a letter of credit or an import permit. It mirrors the commercial invoice in format but is not a demand for payment and is not used for final customs valuation.
