What is Letter of Credit (L/C)?
A bank's guarantee to pay the seller once compliant documents are presented.
A letter of credit (L/C) is an undertaking by the buyer's bank to pay the seller a stated amount once the seller presents documents that comply exactly with the L/C's terms (invoice, bill of lading, certificates, etc.). It substitutes the bank's creditworthiness for the buyer's, reducing risk for both sides in unfamiliar relationships — but demands precise document control.
