What is Documentary Collection?
Banks exchange shipping documents for payment, without guaranteeing it.
In a documentary collection the seller's bank forwards shipping documents to the buyer's bank, which releases them to the buyer against payment (D/P — documents against payment) or against acceptance of a time draft (D/A — documents against acceptance). Banks act as intermediaries but, unlike under a letter of credit, do not guarantee payment.
